Asheville Citizen-Times: ‘Dead in its tracks’: Asheville Downtown Commission unimpressed by Broadway hotel proposal (14 February 2022)

Plans have been filed for a nine-story condo and hotel building near the Masonic Temple downtown.

Other commission members agreed, including Andrew Fletcher, who said this hotel is a prime example of how the city didn’t land in the place it needed to with the hotel industry following the moratorium.

“It was the only hotel project that was unanimously voted down, and it was probably the best one that had ever been proposed to council,” he said, of the first proposal. He called the new one a lesser quality building.

“Hey Design Review folks, chalk up, because this project needs your help,” Fletcher said.

The Design Review Committee meeting set for Feb. 17 has Create 72 Broadway on the agenda for an informal review.
